February News

February, the month of kindness. Can’t wait to get started. Disease projects were to be submitted by the end of January. I have already gone through some of them and they were very impressive. Classroom speeches will begin on Tuesday February 1st. Report cards will be going home on Monday the 7th and interviews will be on the 10th. I would also like to welcome Mr. John Mensah, who will be a student teacher in our class for the next four weeks, beginning February 4.

In literacy this month the grade 7’s will wrap up the Fears and Phobias unit while the grade 8’s will conclude their unit on No Limits. Our reading focus has been on summarizing. That was also the classroom pathway for both the grade 7’s and 8’s. For their performance task at the end, the students in grade 8 will create and present a TV profile on a personality who has tested his/her limits while the grade 7’s will write a recount about an event involving a fear (use scientific name i.e. acrophobia) & make a poster to advertise their story.
We have been working with the newspapers over the last month. Students wrote an opinion piece and a hard news story based on a fairy tale or nursery rhyme. They were very creative. We will continue to expose students to other forms of writing in the paper, including a review for the entertainment section.
Literature circles have been going well. The novel review will be due February 10. Students wishing to do another MI project at the end, that will be optional.

In math, we will conclude our measurement/geometry unit with a series of performance tasks where they will be required to calculate the surface area and volume of specific prisms. The grade 7’s have been working with triangular, trapezoidal and rectangular prisms while the grade 8’s have been dealing with cylinders as will as other regular prisms. Our next unit of study will be on data management.

In history, we are learning about the factors leading to the development of Western Canada. We will look at the role of the RCMP, treaties with the Aboriginals the railroad, the return of Louis Riel and the campaigns to lure immigrants to the West.

Congratulations to the January student of the month winners for Motivation….Dakota Taylor and Olivia Starling.
